Nothing but Love

Carmen Mettler

When that day comes

When the reckoning of a life leads to the final hour

To the beckoning hand of nature’s call,

May you say

May you say

With a wry smile

And a glimmering acknowledgment in your eyes

That you lived

Truly.

That you loved

Fully.

And that you surrendered

Bravely and

Completely

To the life that was calling you

From the beginning.

A faint call at first, barely discernible,

Like the echo of a whisper in your ear

Like the whisper in a dream

Like the light on the elm tree

In the ancient forest

Growing silently and secretly towards the light

Growing stronger with the ebb and flow

Of life’s great longing

To arrive.

Not even the tall shadows of the hauntings from past mistakes

Can dim such a light, carried across time and space

From an infinite beyond

No mind can grasp.

When you feel the touch of this light on the body,

Surrender. Listen. Stand tall.

Rise into the fullness of you.

Let life become a dream

And you

It’s willing servant.

May you be held with the faith

Of mountains

May you know your inheritance.

May the light shine

Purely

Fully

Freely

Through every dark corner of your soul

And light you up

Like a lighthouse

Like the light on the elm tree.

In the end

As in the beginning,

Nothing but light.

I think we can call this love.

Love like the sweet embrace of the ocean hugging the soft curves of this place we call home.

Like the touch of a lover on the skin,

Opening the dark corners of the heart

To receive.

To prepare us for the final letting go.

To remind us to arrive before we leave.

The sun moves swiftly now.

The days quicken.

What you called a life

In the end

Is nothing but

The passing memories

In the hearts of those who loved you.

Nothing but the deep roots grown under your feet

And the steady solid weight  of your presence

Here now.

Informed by the flowing light of centuries.

May you remember the sweet gaze of the one who loved you.

May you be carried by the tender arms of Grace

All the days of your life.

May you dissolve

Finally

Into the groundless ground

Into the light.

Into love.

Home at last.
